A woman from Target Kopje in Masvingo has died after she and her husband were thrown into a 20m deep shaft by robbers who ransacked their house at around 5pm on Thursday last week.
Rutendo Ndega (35) and her husband Obvious Nhokovedza (44) spent a night in the shaft and were only retrieved on Friday afternoon but the former was declared dead on arrival at Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
Masvingo Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the story and told The Mirror that the unidentified gang went way with R800, US$80, $15 000 in an Ecocash account, $500 000 and US$ 4 000 in bank cards, a Samsung cell phone and a Nissan Caravan.
Nhokovedza is still admitted at the hospital.
The couple owns a shop at Muchakata Business Centre in Masvingo Rural.
Sources said Nhokovedza returned home from Zaka to find his wife’s hands tied with tape on both legs and hands. They also tied up Nhokovedza, ransacked the residency looking for money.
They then drove the couple to a disused shaft in the hills behind the suburb in their Nissan Caravan.
At the shaft, they demanded money and pin codes for bank cards and Ecocash accounts.
“They threw the woman first into the shaft and then the husband after being given the pin codes.
The couple spent the night underground and a passer-by heard a cry for help around noon on Friday and called Police.
Dega was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital while Nhokovedza is admitted with severe head and hand injuries. Investigations are underway,” said Dhewa.
