During pregnancy, women are known to crave all manner of odd things. But for a certain Chiedza Muleya, her cravings were one of a kind, if her defence in court is anything to go by.
Upon being arraigned at the court over child theft, the 19-year-old left those in attendance in shock when she claimed that she didn’t have bad intentions when she stole the child.
It was just a craving, like any other when a woman is pregnant, she said.
According to court records, the accused escaped with a child belonging to her neighbor, Shamaine Mutemachani earlier this year.
The court heard that on the material day the complainant left his six-year-old boy under the custody of yet another neighbour and left for work. When she returned in the evening and prepared supper she went for the boy, but to her shock she was informed that Chiedza had earlier on picked the boy, claiming that the mother had sent her to pick him.
This is said to have shocked the complainant who tried to reach Chiedza on phone in vain. She reported the matter to police who traced Chiedza’s mobile phone signal to her rural home.
Chiedza was arrested and returned back to her homestead before being apprehended and charged with child trafficking. In her mitigation, she told the court that her pregnancy brought her so many cravings, including a strong desire for other people’s kids.
“I started loving the boy immediately I got pregnant. It got to a point where I had to steal him. I blame my cravings for that and I apologise,” begged a remorseful and teary Chiedza, who lives with her husband and is expecting their first born.
She has since been released on a cash bail.
