A WOMAN who illegally cultivated mbanje to generate income has been jailed six months.
Christine Tafira (53) of Windale Village 2 Extension in Mhangura appeared before Chinhoyi Provincial Magistrate Melody Rwizi charged with possession of dangerous drugs.
She was sentenced to 12 months in prison where six months were suspended for five years on the condition of good behavior.
She will serve an effective six-month prison term.
Prosecuting, Tafadzwa Rwodzi told the court that sometime in February 2020, Tafira and her husband Calvin Kadonzo who is still at large hatched a plan to cultivate mbanje for sale.
The two then planted 18 mbanje plants in their yard at Windale Farm.
The court heard, a team of police officers went to her residence and interviewed her.
She then led the police officers to her maize field, in the thatched bathing room and the surrounding yard, and showed them 18 plants of mbanje, with height ranging from approximately 10cm to 100cm.
She was arrested, but her husband could not be located.
The mbanje was forfeited by the State for destruction.
